14th September Rome
So today is our last full day in Rome, and quite frankly its just as well as we are all broke, this place is seriously expensive anyway never mind all that. Today we were going to see a few more vistas and started the day with the Aventine Keyhole which is a good view through a keyhole, yes I know but its on the list so we are going. We arranged for a 8 seater taxi to meet us right outside the hotel which was great so the day starting off with no walking. It took slightly longer to get there as Rob had given the taxi driver directions to a Bar called the Aventine Keyhole. We rolled up pleased to see there was only a few people in the queue so we waited inline and each of us looked through the hole and tried to take the picture. I think we all failed at that, so we purchased a little fridge magnet with the image on it for a euro and planned the next stop.
We were now going to the Pantheon and we would walk this 30 minute trip which as per usual started all wrong thangs to Google Maps but eventually at around the half way spot it was gone 12 so we decided to stop for a drink in a bar called “La Taverna La Ghetto”, we did the usual and had all the tables moved to accommodate the 8 of us and sat down for a drink.
From here we walked on towards the Pantheon and 15 minutes later we were in front of it looking at the large queue and decided to tick that off the list and bail. It was seriously hot and we were all feeling tired so we chose to go back to the Spanish steps by taxi. We asked a door man at this fancy hotel to call us a 8 seater which turned up 10 minutes later and we were on our way in no time. We were dropped of at the top of the Spanish steps and walked towards the park entrance looking for the boat lake we had been told about. We got lost as usual and decided to find somewhere for lunch. We found a cafe and all had a basic lunch. During lunch we checked on Google for the location of a bar we had been told about called Stravinskij Bar it was a 3 minute walk but when we rocked up we were told that there was no room for us. We actually felt we were not wanted so we left and we walked back to the hotel. As it was quite early we would stop off at our favourite bar “Taverna” for some drinks we got quite installed there and when it was time to go back and freshen up a few of us decided not to bother and stay. Once we were 8 again we walked up to the restaurant for our evening meal, we chose to go back to “Nana Vini E Cucina”. We had a table inside and ordered our various meals, it started off well but as soon as the food turned up it was clear that things were wrong, Paula’s clams were empty and Elaine’s Mussels we also MIA, the food in general was not that great. So we complained and it took a threat of 8 negative reviews on Trip Advisor before they agreed to take the meals off the bill, we told them 300 was what we were leaving and that was it. We walked back to “Taverna” for more drinks and the end to our little 3 day city break before the cruise starts tomorrow.
