2005 USA Road Trip

Day 1

Well we arrived after no delays and a comfortable flight on BA, The bags were waiting for us on the carousel and our car hire company were also great providing us with a huge Chrysler Trailblazer a 4 x 4 good enough for the job in hand. We hooked up the GPS SatNav system and punched in the hotel name and was pleased when we arrived in the car park some 15 minutes later with no wrong turns. So at the moment we are not going to buy any maps…

Day 2

Well today we put all our trust in the SatNav system and typed in South Fork Ranch and, well we made it with no problems. First thing to know about that place is that it’s tiny, nothing like what you would expect. Also it’s only the exterior shots that were filmed at the ranch, the rest were done in a studio. Great trip though. From there we went to the assassination spot of JFK who was killed 42 years ago today strangely enough. Then from there we went for a…

Day 3

We still have not got over the jet lag so after breakfast at 7:30 this morning we planned the day ahead and decided to go to Fort Worth and Stockyards Station which used to be the biggest and busiest livestock marketing centre in the southwest. It was a bit cheesy but Lorna liked it especially the candy store. At 11:30 the cowboys herded a stock of longhorn cattle down the main street. It was cool and the weather was great. Then we got hungry and decided to find a TGI…

Day 4

Well today we started the road trip good and proper by heading towards Tulsa some 5 hour drive, we stopped once for a coffee and driver change and arrived in Tulsa at the Post Oak Lodge which is a lovely hotel set in large grounds that boasts lakes, trails and log cabins. The really funny thing was as its Thanksgiving we turned up to an empty car park and what looked like a deserted hotel. We pushed on the door and “It Opened” surprised we walked in and the first…

Day 5

Well today was a great day, a tiring one as it was all done on Route 66. Not exactly a fast road but most definitely an interesting route. FYI the route is broken up now as the main interstate has replaced a lot of it but the stretch from Tulsa to Oklahoma is almost intact. So as we set off from Tulsa this morning we got to see quite a large chunk of it. The first place we stopped was the Rock Cafe, which has been around since 1939 and…

Day 6

Today we set off a bit later than usual (must be getting used to the time zone finally) anyway we headed North on Route 83 known as the “Road to nowhere” Boy they weren’t wrong about that, it is a road that basically heads north without any need to turn the steering wheel and its flat and boring. It was interesting to see how the oil and the gas people live and we came to the conclusion they must meet once a month and try and kill each other, as…

Day 7

Well after a terrible nights sleep we decided to head off early and get the heck outa town. It didn’t really have much to offer and the hotel was the local smokers den the room stunk all night of cigarette smoke and it kept us awake. Even Lorna thought it was disgusting. Anyway we knew we had better things to look forward to and we promised ourselves that we would stay in a nice hotel for a few days maybe even a week and use it as a base. Unfortunately…

Day 8

Today started with a nice complimentary breakfast and a bit of work, then we packed the cameras and loaded up and headed towards Pikes Peak which can be access by a cog railway but Lorna didn’t fancy it just in case she wanted to get off, so we drove up which was in itself quite an experience. We didn’t quite make it to the top as the last bit was closed due to too much ice. We started at the bottom at the North Pole Santa’s Grotto, obviously Lorna wanted…

Day 9

The Royal Gorge in Garden City today was our destination and we arrived there at about 11:00 to find we were the only ones there apart from about 6 people. It looked closed but we were glad it was not as it took us an hour to get there. It was worth it, as it has the world’s highest suspension bridge. Lorna felt a bit anxious when we drove over it as it became apparent that the surface was made up of individual planks of wood that get replaced every…

Day 10

Well not much to report today as we spent a lot of time on the road. We originally intended staying in Denver for a few days so we checked out this morning and headed to Denver. When we got there we located a few hotels and they wanted to charge us a fortune and after looking around town we decided that it was not for us and decided to move on. So we thought we would head towards the skiing areas of Vale, Aspen and Breckenridge. We decided on Breckenridge…
