2008 USA Road Trip

Day 1

Well after a great flight in Virgins Upper Class, we landed at LAX airport and flowed through what is normally a tough customs, and picked up our luggage almost straight away, so looking good so far, well we did make a slight mistake and got on the wrong Car rental bus but realised just in time. We picked up our 4×4 Toyota, which is huge and will no doubt handle all that we can throw at it over the next 3 weeks. After a short 20 minute journey we arrived…

Day 2

It was to be expected, we woke up at about 5:30 am local time and managed to go back to sleep for about 90 minutes before we had to get up. So today ended up being a very long day. We started in the hotels restaurant for breakfast, then for a long walk around town and the marina taking in the sites. Its lovely here and very quiet. We settled in for lunch at one of the restaurants in the marina and we pigged ourselves. After we went back to…

Day 3

Well after yet another early start we had breakfast and checked out of our hotel having thoroughly enjoyed our stay in Long Beach. We didn’t exactly know where we were going to end up but we knew it was on the way to San Francisco. First stop was Venice Beach just outside LA, we stopped there for about 45 minutes and had a brief look around and a coffee in Starbucks before we hit the road again and headed North on US1 towards Malibu, Santa Monica and then a 2…

Day 4

Not much to report today, we got up, at what can only be described as a reasonable time, and ate breakfast in the hotel and then decided on what too do today. Well after ages we realised that we was probably not going to do much today, so we planned the next few days over a coffee. But thats for you guys to see, when it happens. This brought us to lunch time, so with empty stomachs we walked down the road to State Street and another fine restaurant for…

Day 5

This morning we were awake at 7:00 am again, so decided to pack up and leave and have a full day. We quite like leaving early it gives us more time to do more things. First we headed to Solvang which is a great little place, basically it was started by a lot of Danish settlers in 1911 and has since grown in population, it is apparently a good resemblance to their homeland, I don’t know about that but we loved it. So first things first we went straight to…

Day 6

OK last night we ate in the hotels restaurant which took about 1 hour turnaround, it was a proper pit stop but we didn’t mind, it got us back to the room early, ready for a good nights sleep helped by the sound of crashing waves which was so nice. Anyway this morning we got up at 8:00 am and had a quick breakfast and packed our bags ready for todays longish journey. It was going to be around 5 hours in total with a few stops, first place was…

Day 8

Today we were quite happy to leave San Francisco. Its a nice enough place but we cant stand the weather, its the end of August and neither of us has any warm clothing to wear so we were pleased to see the clear skies and temperature increase when we left the Bay. It only took 20 minutes before it reached the 80’s and after the two and a half hour drive it was 92 degrees in Groveland where we are staying tonight. The hotel is lovely, very quaint and our…

Day 9

Well Lyle didn’t turn up last night and all of Lorna’s cosmetics were where she left them, Shame that would have been cool. So today we have a long journey to Lone Pine through the national park again but on a different route. We had breakfast in the hotel and packed our bags again and fuelled up the car for the journey to Lone Pine. The park was getting to us, as it was getting boring right up until the point when we stopped at the side of the road…

Day 10

OK yet another restful night thanks to our neighbours, so we were happy to get out of town early this morning especially as we were heading to Death Valley and we wanted to see as much of it as possible before it got too hot. Last night we ate in a nice fine dining restaurant called Seasons which was lovely. Ok the drive to Death Valley was going to take about 90 minutes so we had a quick McDonald’s breakfast and headed off. The temperature was creeping up again, and…
