Day 8
Today started with a nice complimentary breakfast and a bit of work, then we packed the cameras and loaded up and headed towards Pikes Peak which can be access by a cog railway but Lorna didn’t fancy it just in case she wanted to get off, so we drove up which was in itself quite an experience. We didn’t quite make it to the top as the last bit was closed due to too much ice. We started at the bottom at the North Pole Santa’s Grotto, obviously Lorna wanted to go in but Scrooge here put his foot down, thank God. The journey up was fine to start with but at 3,000 + Metres things started to get a bit hairy, the tarmac ran out and it was loose gravel with ice and not particularly wide roads with sheer
drops off the side. So first gear and 4 wheel drive was a must, and it was bloody cold, freezing at about -20deg, we could only stay out of the car for a few minutes at a time but the views were fantastic a whole lot better than the last few days. We got a bit tired and we both got a bit light headed at over 11,500 feet so we came down for a coffee and then headed back to the hotel. We had late lunch and watched a DVD. Tonight we ate in again and went to a local bar and will try and get a good nights sleep something that has not happened yet.
