Day 47
This morning we were in no mad rush to get going although we were keen to get out of Arizona. So we left at about 10am and drove straight towards New Mexico. As we were going to drive on the route we have already covered, we were not going to stop until we got to the new State only for fuel and food. It took about 4 hours before we crossed the state line and then we looked out for places to visit. The only place we could see in our lonely planet book was a deserted Silver mine called Shakespeare south of Lordsburg. But when we got there it was closed. Basically it was deserted after the silver ran out and was left as is and it looked as if it could be interesting but it didn’t look much from the entrance so we weren’t that bothered. We then drove to Deming to look for somewhere to stay and decided on La Quinta which is a nice hotel next to a Holiday Inn that had a bar and restaurant. After we settled we decided to go for a drink next door and a meal. Well the bar was rammed and there were all sorts of folk in there including the local hairdresser Dana (Day ner) and he, yes he was a gay as you like but a real nice guy. There was also a real cowboy rodeo guy called Tony who tours around the Sates on Rodeo tours and was telling us all about it, he was even chewing on tobacco, Lorna wanted to see a real cowboy on this trip and this guy was spot on. He wasn’t as tough as we thought though as he had a crush on a women in the bar and got Dana to ask her if she wanted a drink, she said yes and then said she was going to a club nearby and he could meet her there. He asked if we wanted to go and offered us a ride in his “rig” but we wanted to stay and chat more with Dana. He was hilarious and so camp but
we enjoyed the chat and it went late into the night by which time we had agreed to let him colour Lorna’s and cut my hair (what were we thinking) a great night though.
