Day 5 Douro Valley
Had a nice lay in this morning after a good night’s sleep no alarm just got up when we woke up. Fortunately breakfast was still being served so we went down at around 10am got seated and was presented with 2 glasses of fizz and a big slice of cake. Well it is our Anniversary lol. Today we are booked to go to the hotels sister hotel where they have a vineyard for some wine tasting at 2.30pm. Before that we were going to walk across the bridge to the other side for a look around. Plan on taking it nice and easy today we have nice posh meal later so don’t want to get too knackered or drunk. We walked around town for a couple of hours the temps were great today and a nice breeze but we still got hot and sweaty. There were a load of bikers in town which is not surprising as we are on 2 of the best roads in Portugal the N2 & N222. We got back to the hotel at around 12.30 just in time for lunch. Which we had outside. We also realised that the other hotel that we were supposed to go this afternoon was going to cost quite a lot in taxis and we also knew that the historical steam train was leaving Regua Station today so we opted for some drinks in the restaurant right next to where the train departs. The bar is well cool as you actually sit in a old railway cargo carriage right next to the Steam train. I was able to get right onto the platform and get some photos. We had a few drinks and watched the passengers get onboard. Just before 3.30pm I walked well in front of the train right on the tracks to get some good video. I had a perfect spot no way would I be allowed to do this in England. So as it started to head towards me I hit the phones button into record and again when it passed by me. Happy with the way it looked on the screen I looked at my handy work. I was only back in photo mode, and I had taken a distant photo of it starting and another of it after it had passed me, 2 usless images and no video. What a absolute twat. Pissed off about what had happened I walked back to the bar and told Lorna. We stayed a bit more and then walked back to the hotel. There was going to be a sunset party outside from 5.30pm so we got back for that, it was crap Portuguese music so we gave it a miss. Had a rest and got ready for tonights evening meal. At 6.30 we heard the steam train come back. So we got ready and took a taxi to the restaurant for 8pm. We actually got there 30 minutes early but we got seated outside now this was a gamble because this evening the wind had picked up and cooled down so we sat back from the waters edge at a table with a heater. The food as usual was amazing but unfortunately because of the wind the food cooled down quickly we didn’t want to move inside as its a busy and noisy so we persivered. We even got a complimentary anniversary desert. So at around 10pm we were finished and waiting for Mario our taxi driver who brought us here. 10 minutes later we were having a nightcap in our hotels bar then off to bed at you guessed it 11pm.
