Day 62

Today we got up early as we had a lot of ground to cover and the goal was to reach Savannah in Georgia whilst getting in a few sights en-route. The first place we stopped at was Myrtle Beach, which is a golfing coastal resort. I have been there before and wanted Lorna to see it, although we knew it would
be very quiet. Myrtle Beach has the largest amount of golf courses in the States in any one place and possibly the world. We didn’t stop long just enough to get a brief walk on the beach and take a few pictures. After that we drove to a beautiful little town called Mcclenville, which has a population of just 300, and we took in all the sites the book told us about. All 3. But we stopped at a lovely little cafe and had a coffee and some home made cookies. Moving on from there we stayed on route 17 South, and looked out for an area just north of Savannah that had small stalls on the road side of hand weaved baskets and trinkets. We stopped, as this apparently is a dying trade. We picked one and asked if we
could video the lady weaving her sellable’s. We felt it was only fair to buy a little something and left with a glass mat for $7. We then pushed for Savannah itself and were really pleased when we got there for about 4:00pm. We went straight to the visitors centre, as we knew this had the bench that Tom Hanks sat on in the film “Forrest Gump”. We also got a great deal on a new hotel on the river front at
$79 a night. When we got to the hotel the desk clerk was kind enough to put us in a suite for the same rate. We then took a walk down by the riverside to check it out for tonight. We found a nice bar and restaurant that we will probably re visit later tonight. Tomorrow we intend on going to the town square where the scene from Forest Gump was shot on the bench and take some more photos. There is also quite a bit more to see, so we may stay one more night.
