Dec 20th. Day 11 Salida CO
Today we were back on the road again although we could have easily stayed in bed this morning as last nights antics had taken its toll on us especially Lorna. So we were not going to travel far today but first we were going to a British Suppliers shops for some essentials for our Christmas diner. We left with 2 crackers, 2 mini Christmas Puddings, Paxo Stuffing, Yorkshire pudding mix, Bisto Gravy and some Minced pies, it cost a whopping 34 dollars but it now means we will have all we need to make a nice Christmas diner when we are in Sedona.
After this we punched in the Royal Gorge which was about an hour away in sort of the right direction, we had been before and its a cool suspension bridge over the Arkansas River. When we arrived it looked completely different and we soon found out why, there had been a huge fire a few years ago and most of the building were destroyed so they totally rebuilt the place but now you were not allowed to drive over the bridge which was a shame but they had a gondola and a zip line across the gorge. We were thinking of going on the zip line but they had already charged us $24 each to get in and the zip line would have been another $45 each so we took the gondola across and walked back. It was still a really cool place and not busy at all.
We got back into the car and entered Sedona into the GPS but we were only going to go maybe until 4pm (ish) and look for a place to stay, the trip from the gorge was so scenic we followed the US50 alongside the Arkansas River and the views were breathtaking.
Lorna was feeling a little better and needed some food so we stopped at a McDonalds in a town called Salida and ate a cheeseburger Yuck. Anyway it was around 4:15 so thought we might as well stay here so we looked for some hotels and found one outside of town called the mountain goat lodge so we drove over to have a look, it looked really nice but it was in the middle of nowhere and it didn’t look like it had a restaurant so we drove back to town and settled in the Comfort Inn in the middle of town for a well deserved rest. Nothing too crazy tonight but we were recommended a place in the historic part of town called the Boathouse Cantina so we drove a few blocks down the main street of this lovely part of town, OMG in the distance we could see a huge and I mean HUGE illumination on the mountain of a Christmas tree. The restaurant was all the way down the end next to the river and under the huge tree, we had a lovely meal the place is a bit spit and sawdust but the salad Lorna had has so far got the prize for best goats cheese salad. We drove back to the hotel after taking some photos and had an early night
