Day 52
Not wanting to put down Texas, but we were real keen to get into another State this morning so we left at 9:00am on the nose after refuelling both the truck and our stomachs and drove without stopping for anything other than food and fuel until we were stopped by the police. This time it was Lorna’s turn at
being the criminal. Apparently there is a law in Texas that if a police vehicle is stopped on the hard shoulder with the lights flashing you have to switch lanes away from the car or slow down considerably. Well as you can imagine we were well in the know about this little detail as we flew past the copper on the side of the road and wondered why he looked so pissed off. Anyway we kind of got away with it. But unlike me Lorna got a ticket, but it was only a warning ticket to “think about it” as the copper said. Anyway we were really pleased that after 8 hours of constant driving we were out of Texas and into Louisiana. The scenery changed almost straight away and we headed towards Charles Lakes where there are
casinos/hotels, which as you can imagine pleased Lorna. At first we had problems finding a room, as almost all of the hotels were fully booked with contractors working on the rebuilding of the area after the hurricane. But we noticed a particular hotel on an island that looked way beyond contractors
allowances so we tried it and got lucky. In fact the room rate was very good, so we booked in for the night and after 3 room changes we finally settled in a lovely room. We then rushed a shower and had a few drinks down in the bar then a meal and then of course headed to the tables. We had about 2 hours at the blackjack tables for $60 each. So not bad. Lorna is already talking about making this our base camp, whilst we roam about the immediate area. Might have to re think that one.
