Day 35

Merry Christmas. We hope you had a great day and got what you were hoping for. We went out last night and met up with a couple of guys in the bar and stayed out with them and got well pissed, so this morning we were feeling a bit tired but we had breakfast in bed and opened our presents which was nice. The weather is actually nice today so we might venture out, as the streets are empty. We drove down the the Space needle but decided against going…

Day 36

Today we had a whole day to prepare for Lorna’s parents to arrive so we didn’t do too much. The car had to go back so we did that in the morning it was only down the road by 8 blocks so that didn’t take up too much time we handed back a car that had been rear ended once and who’s brakes were now shot, they didn’t seem to mind and didn’t even inspect the car despite the 5200 mile endurance it had been through. We did have to…

Day 37

We all checked out and had breakfast ready for our mammoth train journey from Seattle to Los Angeles. We got the hotel shuttle to drop us off at the station and checked our bags and then the fun started. AMTRAK well what can we say about that mob. A great big pile of crap. DO NOT USE THEM unless your happy about being delayed by hours and hours and having all sorts of excuses thrown at you why the ageing rolling stock and warped tracks cant cope with a train…

Day 38

Day 2 on the train and we expect to be here all day but at least the weather is getting better. The sun came out south of San Francisco and we hope it’s going to stay out. The food and service is actually very good and of course free. But we are just fed up with the slow going of the train and the fact that we know we have to make our way to LAX airport when we get to the station then sort out the hire car and…

Day 39

After 3 hours of sleep we all decided it was time to get up or miss the only full day we have in Los Angeles. So after a big breakfast we got in the truck and drove to LA. We managed to fit in quite a lot considering the traffic. LA is such a gridlock (much worse than the M25. Really) we headed first to the famous Hollywood sign but it’s closed to the public so we got as close as we could and trekked up a trail to get…

Day 40

We checked out this morning and got a few more sites in around LA before heading off to San Diego. The first stop was Gladys Ave the home of the self proclaimed thinnest house in the world, But unknown to us there was 2 Gladys Avenues in Los Angeles and the first place we went to got us all a bit worried as there were really dodgy looking people slumming it, and we decided it must be wrong that’s when we found out there was a second location with the…

Day 41

Well its New Years Eve and we are going to spend it in Phoenix but we had to get there first, we thought it would take about an hour but we then discovered it was 4 hours away and there was a 1 hour time change working against us so we pushed on after a full Denny’s breakfast. On route we heard about a huge range of sand dunes near Gila Bend and thousands of people go there with Dune buggies, Quad bikes etc to blast around and stay in…

Day 43

Sorry about yesterday we just vegged out in the villa all day, well that was after Lorna and Sandra went shopping for 5 hours. So nothing to report. Today though we checked out of the villa and headed towards the OK Corral in the original town of Tombstone. But on the way we noticed an Ostrich farm so we stopped and went in. You were allowed to feed them, which was hilarious as Lorna was crapping herself each time they got close. After that we aimed towards Tombstone and the…

Day 44

We had planned today quite well, and the first stop was going to be the Kartchner Caverns National park, which is a quite recent discovery of probably one of the best preserved caves in America and maybe even the world. Unfortunately we were not allowed to take anything in with us, so no photos, but I found some pictures on the web to put up to give you an idea. It was really good and well preserved. After that we headed towards “The Thing” something that we had seen advertised…

Day 45

As mentioned yesterday as we were only a few miles from Tombstone, we had to pass through it again to get to our first destination the Titan Missile museum which just rubbed in how close we were to where we started from yesterday and how we wasted so many hours travelling round in circles. Never mind it all gets remembered as one of those memorable experiences on this road trip. The Missile museum was great, not that Lorna and Sandra thought so, in fact they preferred to go to Safeway’s,…
